Madaa Creative Center

The village of Silwan is situated on the south-eastern slopes of the old city of Jerusalem, and counts about 55,000 Palestinian residents. It is estimated that above 50% of the population is under 18, and that 75% of the children live under the poverty line. Until the establishment of the Madaa Silwan Creative Center, there had been no place in Silwan that offered extracurricular courses, or recreational activities for the children and youth.

Prelude sponsors the Silwan Ta’azef Music School (together with Kinderpostzegels), the Dabke School (traditional Palestinian dance), day trips and the yearly Summer Games.

The center was established in October 2007 with the opening of the Silwan Ta’azef Music School.

The center offers subsidized courses and classes for children and youth in music, art, theatre, dabke (Palestinian traditional dance), and languages. Next to the weekly classes, the center also houses a library and a play corner for children, and organizes events and projects for the community, such as film evenings, circus performance, summer camps, traditional embroidery project, and a traditional cooking project.
